What is the name of your state? North Carolina
I Yesterday went to cash a check from someone who owed me money. Went to their bank, I showed the women my I.D. OK, she then asked for more OK, had a CC and SS FA ID card. Well now the problem, I yelled thru the window to stop and asked for the check back, she had written my DL, SS# and yes a CC number on the reverse of my check, well I was upset, the lead teller came over and said all banks do this and they will not cash the check without at least two forms of ID on the check. I said well you see me their's my ID, this is the bank on the check. She "well if the check is returned we know where you are" it's there bank and the money is removed from there account instantly. I asked if she or the bank would be liable if my ID was stolen and she stated some law that protects the bank.
This person a stranger would have had my SS#, DL # and a valid CC#

This can't be the norm can it?

Did the bank specifically request your social security card and credit card or did they just request additional ID? Social security card and credit cards are two items I would never use as ID for check cashing.

The specifically asked for the CC so if the check didn't clear they would have recourse. Well that's B-S because it was the same bank it was drawn on so it would have been deducted instantly. The SS card was the only thing they would accept, they would not accept a Passport or a federally issued Gun carry permit.

Well this wasn't my bank, I went to theirs, I really don't believe in banks much anymore I have a checking account that I use and thats basically it. Reason I went to their's is that if I went to my bank they would have held up my money for 3-6 days and if it was a bad check taken my money.
Well I talked to a neighbor today and they told me of a bank that now takes your picture and want a CC number when you cash a check and don't have an account with them.

they have the right to ask for the CC the question becomes did they write down the ENTIRE number of just the first and last four digits of the CC#? if they only wrote down the first and last they are protected by Federal Regulations that allow them social security numbers are RARELY used as ID next time don't give them the SS# a Government issued ID WITH and expiration date is ALL they need if they want a secondary id a CC will do more than that tell them to take a hike and to check their FDIC and FED regulations

They wrote down the entire number along with my D.L.
What would be the advantage of them only writing down some of the numbers if it where to get money from me if the check didn't clear. (Which is B.S. that check cleared the second it went into the system.)
I took the check back and crossed out all of them and they did cash it after some discussion.

social security numbers are RARELY used as ID

And just where did you get THAT notion ?? Banks are ALWAYS using SSN's for ID ! They RELY on it and use it as an identifier for EVERY account ! The ONLY thing that is going to stop that practice is if those idiots in Washington pass the necessary legislation before them (there are at least 4 bills) that will prevent the use of SSN's as a universal ID #.. as it has been mis-used that way for decades !

for account opening you must provide your SS# as id....but as an id it is no longer the standard which is one of the reasons many states are now issuing PHOTO ID with numbers that AREN"T your SS# please remember that "OPENING" an account and "providing Identification" are two entirely different things.with entirely different requirements..oh and when you're opening an account remember that in most states and with most banks you are required to use a valid government issued PHOTO id along with the SS#...you can't use it as a primary source of ID for check cashing because it doesn't have a PHOTO and it doesn't have an expiration date.

and the reason why i asked about whether or not they wrote your entire CC# down is because in most states if they write the entire number thats ILLEGAL...the MOST they can write are the first and last 4 with expiration...and in my state you can only write the TYPE of card and the expiration....

That is precisely the thing that MUST STOP, along with all other misues of our SSN. Doctors offices use it, hospitals use it, EVERYONE uses the damn thing as a universal ID .. and they wonder why ID theft is so rampant in this country

Frankly, I don't think a photo ID is good enough, anyone can replace a photo of themselves on a photo id and if you can't do it yourself there are people who will do it for a price. The use of biometrics has to be promoted. Its pretty difficult to forge a fingerprint. The technology exists, but big business doesn't want to spend some of their BILLIONS to put it into place.. they'd rather let comsumers get screwed over by ID thieves.
