I worked for 6 years at my job at a community college. A secretary for a two person dept. The person hiring me left after 3 years. I had worked for her in a previous job. We worked very well together and she was very professional.

I taught my new boss the ropes, as his background was nothing like this job in fund raising. He is a very stiff, rude, unfriendly person. He has many times ignored other co-workers while seeing them outin public. It got so the past two years that he would ignore me, yell at me in front of others, maybe speak and say hellow or not. He made me cry several times in front of co-workers. Finally, my co-workers said to to HR and we'll back you. Well, I did complain. He told me stuff like "if anything I've been too nice to you, letting all this stuff slide (meaning mistakes). I wish I'd had a tape recorded. After HR investigating, they upheld that he was harrassing me. It let up for awhile.

In the meantime, he keeps walking out the door without telling me good-night or where he was going in the middle of the day. He would go to another secretary though and kiss up to her. I was his sec'y, not her. She loved the extra work, as she didn't have enough to do. Boss kept on, yelling at me in front on MY FAMILY WHO STOPPED BY TO SAY HELLO. After I made the charge, my next evaluation was horrid. I'd had 5 years of good reviews. But, now all of a sudden, I am incompetent, hard to get along with, etc. Last year, he said how he was looking forward to working with me. The other ladies/gents in the office noticed how horribly nasty he was to me. Finally, I could take it no more. I called in one day (shortly after surgery) and said that I could not take it any longer. I went to my GP to get a stress slip. I got two weeks off. They decided to move me to another department doing straight data entry. Nothing else, just that. A job no-one wants.

I said ok and came back to work and did that job for a week. I'd just had eye surgery a couple of weeks before that. I was able to do my previous job, but this intense computer work was more than I could handle sight-wise. I got a slip from my eye dr saying I was unable to do my job. I am still in a state of not being able to see right.

I am on FMLA, short-term disability (26 weeks) and don't know if I can be "fixed" to go back within the 90 days of FMLA. My first job (was taken from me) after all my complaints about the boss. Then I was put on data-entry. If I am able to "see" enough in a couple of months, I know I'll be put on the data-entry job. I do not want more eye surgery as it just gets worse. I am not far from being able to retire, like a year. They may just want to get rid of me...and not question the 26 weeks STD. I did cause "trouble" for my boss and others because we work in administration. My boss never learned the workings of our dept in his 3 years there. When I abruptly didn't come to work, it was obvious he knew nothing. They are bringing in trainers from out of state to train 4 people. This is at a cost of thousands. I would have my boss for free if he had ever asked me.

I did say "retaliation" after my bad evaluation. They covered their butts and said not. Then, lastly, I claimed a hostile work environment (UNDERSTATEMENT) and they wrote up very quickly that I was not harrased due to any "race, religion, age, discrimination. I am sick about this whole mess. My boss is known as not-friendly, arrogant, quick-tempered and a narcissist. He gets to stay on the job......and I know he's doing badly and I'm off on disability.

I claimed a hostile work environment (UNDERSTATEMENT) and they wrote up very quickly that I was not harrased due to any "race, religion, age, discrimination. Which is an accurate statement. By your own account ("My boss is known as not-friendly, arrogant, quick-tempered and a narcissist") he's nasty to virtually everyone. While he clearly has the people skills of a turnip, no laws require the boss to be nice. He'd have to be singling you out BECAUSE of your race, religion, age, gender, etc. for this to be prohibited discrimination/harassment and that clearly lis not the case.

Nothing you describe is unlawful. If he's failing in his job duties because you're not there to fix things, then that's something for his boss to deal with. Perhaps between his arrogant and unpleasant behavior and incompetence on the job, his boss will wise up and make a change. But that decision is completely out of your hands.

Since you're so close to retirement, hopefully there will be a job you can handle for a year when your leave is exhausted. Good luck.
