i divorced my husband about 9 years ago. we were married 18 years, he became disabled 10 years into the marriage so he received ssi and I worked full time the entire marriage. we adopted our son. i was required to pay all of the bills and given the house we'd purchased 1 yr. prior to divorce (no equity). i was advised to file bankruptcy by divorce lawyer but i couldn't afford to do that. house went into foreclosure. i was required to pay family support of $400 per mo. which is taken directly out of my pay every mo. court did not seem to know how to handle adoption assistance income or ssi that was for my son. my son turns 18 in may 2002 and adoption assistance and ssi will stop but he will not graduate until 9/2002.
my ex has no contact with our son and left the state after i agreed to pay off his 1994 buick regal. i want to quit paying family support. my son has caused so much chaos in his teens that my new husband lives in a separate apt. the expenses are horrendous with my son in and out of juvenile hall, court, etc.
what can i do to stop family support payments besides quit my job?
