What is the name of your state?Florida.
Hello I am trying to find out if a company can move your work location 75 miles away. My husband's company just informed him that he would have to drive 75 miles away to report to work and that they would not be able to compensate him for the extra driving. Please help!

My response:

Okay. We'll help.

I'll pass around a "Gas Money" collection plate among the contributors to FreeAdvice, and we'll send you the money. How's that for "help"?

Hello I am trying to find out if a company can move your work location 75 miles away. Of course. A company can relocate their worksite any place they wish to.

My husband's company just informed him that he would have to drive 75 miles away to report to work and that they would not be able to compensate him for the extra driving. They're not required to. I agree that's a heck of a commute. I expect this employer will experience a fair amount of turnover in the coming months as employees find new jobs closer to home.

Of course they can. They can move your job location to Seattle, Washington if they want to.

It is just barely possible that this MAY be considered "good cause to quit" and receive unemployment, but you will need to check that out with Florida's unemployment office. DO NOT quit on that basis before you confirm it. I am NOT guaranteeing this.

I belive the 2005 mileage rate for business use is up to $0.405/mile, so it's almost like hubby got a $303.75 per week raise! (Well, once you do your taxes of course).

I can only speak on the rules I know within my company when they relocated a number of workers.

1) Yes they can relocate his position.
2) No, they're not required to compensate the difference - but you should be able to claim the difference on your taxes (difference being the distance to the new location from home (minus) the distance to the old location from home).

Check that when you do your taxes - I'm only quoting what I heard for PA.

Sorry, that sucks - but please remember, you or your husband working there is a voluntary action - he can always start looking for another job. Wish I could be of more help.

I think that you are confusing the possible tax deduction for moving costs with the deductibility of commuting expense. The expense of commuting to your regular work location is never deductible.

True, and unless you already go long form - tax deductions are a moot point.

And you are absolutely correct. Poster, if there is a "CAP" on his miles from home to his work site and the new site is farther, please look into the fact that your employer may have to put your husband on expenses.

I can travel to my job site within fifty miles, once I am transferred past 50 miles expenses kick in, but every company is different.
