What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? West Virginia

I work as a surgical tech in WV. I am required to be a member of a labor union to be employed at my hospital, even though I do not wish to be a member. Our union has voted to issue a strike notice and is planning to picket. I wish to cross the line and continue working but am being threatened with fines and lawsuits if I do. Can I be sued for those fines if I work, or can I avoid such legal action since this is basically a closed shop facility and I cannot petition to be removed from the union and still maintain my job?

Yes you can be sued and yes you will probably lose. Not only that, your employer can be sued for allowing you to work during a strike, and your employer would probably lose that lawsuit.

I'm really surprised your employer would allow this. What exactly was your employer's response when you notified your employer of your intentions to work during the strike?
