What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? SC
If I replied to a text survey about my service at a phone store with an untrue statement about an employee which I retracted when called by the company, can I be sued by the employee?
Possibly.
Here is a link to your other thread posted in the Hiring/Firing section of the forum:

You say in your other thread that the statement that was made was made about you, by your ex, and you were fired as a result. The statement said that you were "inappropriate and flirted with a married person." This type of statement could potentially be viewed as defamation per se (or defamatory on its face) which, if so viewed, would presume actual malice. There would be no need to prove actual damages for a case to proceed against the one who made the false comment. A case could be supported even if the false statement was later retracted, which you say it was.
Defamation per se statements include those that question a person's moral fitness and fitness in their chosen business or profession.
Although you could show special damages (you lost your job) and you could potentially show general damages (injury to your reputation, mental suffering, hurt feelings ...), the cost of a legal action must be considered carefully. These are not inexpensive actions to pursue - and having a court rule in your favor will not mean that you will get your job back.
You could have all facts personally reviewed by an attorney in South Carolina to better determine if you have an action worth pursuing.
Good luck.
