Okay, a letter explaining the confusion about the lease term is a good idea so I will do that this week and see what happens.
One more thing.... if the landlord is adamant about getting the property back, you should include something about your being willing to negotiate an early termination of your lease to compensate for your moving, utility, offset rent, etc.

**A: yes, cash talks so you may want to throw out round numbers such as $5000, $10,000 etc.
