Can my mom practice her driving with an expired license?

How long has your mother been driving?
If, as I suspect it has been for a very long time, and she now needs to practice, then maybe it's time for her to retire from the drivers seat.:)

In this case, I agree with justalayman. If mom doesn't have a (valid) license, then mom will need a permit. Of course, the OP should contact the appropriate state folks to confirm this. I hope the OP comes back to share what he is told...

Quite frankly, justalayman, you wear me out. I am happy to let MidwestTech call the SOS today.
It’s simply that you have stated my post was in error yet I provided statutory proof of my statement. Given your position of perceived correctness and authority on this forum, I simply sought to publicallly cleanse my besmirched reputation.

Their cars are very new and very advanced, and she has a difficult time with these cars. Her car is 25 years old and is easy for her to use.
The problem with this line of reasoning is that your mom isn't going to be licensed to drive just her car, she is going to be licensed to drive any car. Sure, today she's only driving her car, but what if it breaks down tomorrow and she is forced to get a newer replacement?

I besmirched your reputation by saying a learners permit was not necessary to renew a license? Re-read my earlier post.

MidwestTech said his mom already has had lessons from private instructors but she is uncomfortable in their cars. If mom needed any permit, she would have one (good for at least a year).

If the mom is wanting to drive her repaired 1995 Nissan Maxima, I can see why the driver instructors are insisting on using their own cars (equipped with second brakes).

MidwestTech can call today (if he hasn't already) to see what is required of his mom before "practice" driving.

My point was simply stating she needs a permit and you disagreed with that statement. Whether she actually has one (which is an unknown at this point) is irrelevant.

If she has a permit, she is allowed to practice with midwesttech (which was actually ops only original question) if op is 21 or older and has whatever type of license mom has a permit for. Your statements clearly show you see a difference between mom driving with a licensed instructor and Midwesttech. I stated mom needs a permit, you refuted that.

I’ll belabor this no longer other than to leave this here

No. A learners permit is not necessary for someone looking to renew a license.

She needs to renew an expired license. Her license has not been suspended or revoked.

Surely appears to be refutation to me.

... says justalayman belaboring it. :p

Okay. I refuted what you said. MidwestTech will probably return at some point in time to tell us what he learned.

Well, I just spoke to the Illinois Secretary of State's office, and I was told that she does, indeed, need a permit to ride with anyone (myself or an instructor). Someone her age can obtain a permit just by passing a written test (getting 28 out of 35 questions correct) and paying $20.

By the way, she had some private instructors *before* her license expired, *before* she took her test.

im glad to hear you researched this. The possible penalties are too severe to not check into it.

Best of luck to her but for the sake of everybody on the road, at least look at your mother with the questions of others suggesting she may be beyond where it would be safe for her to drive. Nobody wants to accept they’ve reached thst point but most all of us do eventually.

Thank you for letting us know what you learned, MidwestTech.

NOW, justalayman, I will eat some crow ... or maybe just head to Taco Bell. :)
