Can school ask hiree to be member of a religion?

Just saw an add in my major metro paper for a secondary principal (I am not seeking this job).

Among other standard stipulations, applicant must be a, . . . hmm, let's say "Druid."

If school accepts state and/or federal benefits (busing within X mile radius, free textbooks, e.g.), is this legal?

Can a private school require a principal to be a member of a religion, if it accepts the aid(s) I mentioned?

General no but there are exceptions.
I am aware of a private school that got a ruling that it is not discrimination on the part of the school to only accept teachers of the Protestant religion.
