Okay, first off I want to say that I am totally wrong. I know I should have had auto insurance and now I will have to face the music. Problem is my active imagination is conjuring up every form of imaginable punishment.

What I am really looking for is a bit of information about what I can expect. I have never had any kind of ticketing problem before. What can the judge do? Impose a fine? (What is the maximum?) Suspend my license? (For how long?) And dear God, can he/she put me in jail? (Does this really happen?)

The Facts are: I was stopped in Bloomingdale, Illinois which is in DuPage County. I did not have proof of insurance on me. My insurance expired four months ago while I was recovering from a fire started by a next door neighbor. (I know this is no excuse but try getting all your affairs in order when all you have left in the world is the clothes on your back and your car.)Okay no excuses. Please let me know what I can expect so I can stop falling asleep and waking up to a knotted up stomach. Thank you!

A lawyer would have to know the facts and the full history -- but if you have a clean record, the judge wil not send you to Joliet or a similar place. If it is just a ticket, you'd be best off paying the fine and getting the insurance.

Hmm.... Too bad it's not Cook County. ;) Time to work the machine. So you or any friends/family have contacts with government types? (SAs, cops, county commissioners, etc.) Anyone willing to call in a favor on your behalf? Anyone you can pressure into doing so? Since you're completely & totally guilty, you might as well make an appointment with the State's Attorney handling your case & see if s/he'll bargain it down due to extenuating circumstances. This will be easier if you're cute & the SA likes girls or has ever suffered a house fire. It'll be even easier if the SA's neighbor has primed the pump for you. If you strike out with the SA, you can throw yourself on the mercy of the court for the same extenuating circumstances. Did you know you didn't have insurance or did the renewal notice burn up with the house? Take the newspaper photos of the burning house along with you for sympathy value. If you go to court, take along your city councilwoman character reference too. Ain't Illinois politics wonderful? ;) You will not go to jail so don't lose any more sleep over it.

This is not legal advice and you are not my client. Double check everything with your own attorney and your state's laws.
