What is the name of your state? South Carolina

I hope this is in the correct forum. I know it's a stupid question but I'm WAY too embarrased to ask anyone face-to-face.

My car loan was sent to a collection agency and I got a settlement letter. After I paid it off, I never heard anything else. Now, would the original lienholder have the car title? How do I obtain it? Would I need a "paid as agreed" letter before attempting to get the tilte? I have no original paperwork from the loan (I've moved several times).
I hope I don't sound like a total idiot. Thank you for any help whatsoever.

I had the same thing with a CA. I contacted the Original Finance Company and let them know I was paid up, and they sent me a "Release of Title." It took about a month. But i got it!
