I allowed a handy man to barter rent for fixing up my house. Other than the fact that I smoke weed I am a law abiding citizen. I knew this guy from when I wasn't such a law abiding citizen. Anyways the armed robbers busted down my door. They were looking for drugs. I think he may have owed money but am not sure. They used my car to get away. I have since recovered the car. It looks like about $1000 in damages and that's what my deductible is.Although I reported it to my insurance company I am having seconds thoughts about filing a claim. Why? That police report looks ugly and I don't want the insurance company to have a copy of it.. They took the handy man to jail after searching his room. He admitted to everything in his room. I was not charged with anything. I drive at work and am worried about my employer finding out. Do I need to be concerned?

"The police report looks ugly and I don't want the insurance company to have a copy of it", really doesn't tell me much. Police reports are rarely pretty.

In any event, if your damages are $1000, and your deductible is $1000, I don't see any point in continuing with the claims process.

The report has details of the robbery that I don't want my employers insurance company to see. I am not sure if insurance companies share that kind of information. Although I think this body shop if to inflate the estimate to save me some money. I don't want to be involved in any kind of Karma.

You do realize that the police report is public information that pretty much anyone could get a copy of if they so desired.

They do. The claim will be posted on CLUE even if closed without payment.

Here's the legal stuff:

Your policy requires you to report any claims, losses or accidents that you have knowledge of. A liability claim could be filed against you if the thief was in an accident that damaged property or injured people. You would, of course, be defended by your insurance company and likely found not liable but if you conceal this from your insurance company and something happens later, you might be left out in the cold.

As a practical matter, the chances of that happening are slim, so the choice to report it, or not, is yours.

I only have to submit a police report to the insurance company if I am making a claim which I decided not to. Yes its public record but the more likely scenario if any at all is what adjusterjack referred to. The claim will be posted on clue but with no police report submitted since there was no payout claim. I worried that my employer's insurance company will at some point do a driving background check and see that police report. No payout claim so no police report.

When your employer checks your driving record it will show tickets and at-fault accidents that you were involved in.

I don't think this incident will appear on your driving record.

The police report could come up in a general background check and then it's anybody's guess as to what your employer might do.

I intend to order my CLUE report. How does the claim take to be posted on CLUE?

No idea. The report is free. Doesn't matter really, if you try it now and try again in a month or two.
