What is the name of your state? NY

If I'm not mistaking, NY has pasted a law that every apartment or home has to have a carbon dioixde detactor in it. True or false... And if true my landlord wants to put one in everyones apartment but wants to charge everyone per apartment $25.00. Is he suppose to do that if it a law. That's lamost like a smoke detector... We didn't have to pay for that...

Carbon dioxide is a relatively harmless gas. It's what creates the fizz in your soda pop. What might be required is a carbon monoxide detector. If it is required, the landlord has to pay for it. Contact your local health department or state agency that regulated housing, they can answer your question.

Plain English Explanation: NYC CO Law

For New York City: http://www.nyc.gov/html/hpd/html/for-owners/carbonmonoxide.html

Some highlights: Units are required to be installed by November 1, 2004. Time extensions considered on case by case basis.

One unit within 15 feet of every bedroom. Units must be UL approved.

Tenant pays $25. for each one required and is responsible for maintaining them.

Certificate of installation must be submitted.

PS: on "The Wall" forum at www.heatinghelp.com, I've read discussion that UL approved CO detectors don't alarm until CO levels are higher than safe. Most of those experts suggest a different type of alarm that is considerably more expensive. I suppose a UL alarm is better than none though.
