Cell phone use during police encounters

Being rude to the officer who pulls you over, who has the power to decide whether to write you a ticket or let you off with a warning, sounds like a BRILLIANT idea to me.

Maybe I should be more specific in my question/reasoning. I remember in Houston three separate cases where a person was not being rude, but either placed a phone call to a witness or to their own voicemail to record the encounter. Each officer was found guilty of misconduct and disciplined or fired.

I'm certain this happens all over the country, I in fact have been the victim of it, but not by police officers but other law enforcements agents.

Using safety as a way to justify ordering someone off their phone would go the same route of cops ordering people to put away their cell phone because we're using it as a recorder...you can't do it unless it's impeding you from doing your job.

There's a difference between having the phone open and laying on the seat next to you, and chatting on it while the officers are talking to you. I could care less if you have your phone on the seat ... but, if you start giving info as to your location, the number and disposition of the officers, etc., then you're going to be removed from the car and separated from the phone. Likewise, if you are chatting on the phone while I am dealing with you, you are going to get asked to hang up or might even be separated from the phone.

Record all you want so long as you aren't putting me at risk or causing a distraction.

I dunno ... "Muskrat Love" doesn't intrigue me. But, if that keeps you calm during a traffic stop, knock yourself out.
