Certified vehicle with no warranty

I have a friend that bought a used Dodge Dakota with stickers saying "Certified Used" but it came with no warranty. Once he got it on the road for a few days, he found some steering issues and had to buy new parts (rack and pinion). My question is, what does the "certified used" mean legally, I know if you buy like a Ford Certified vehicle it comes with a limited warranty. And does he have any recourse to recoup what he paid for the parts to fix the vehicle?

"Certified used" does not mean a warranty. unless a warranty is offered.

Basically, without a warranty, certified used means nothing more than a Dodge mechanic inspected the vehicle - a gimmick in effect. Still an as is sale.

About all you can count on with these kind of words is that they guarantee that the vehicle has been used.

A few of the major car companies came up with this wording to entice buyers to purchase select used models that were rigorously inspected and maintained. Now that they(companies like Lexus and Infiniti) have established the term, other companies, some of which are just used car dealers are trying to cash in on the gimmick by just using the term but not having anything to back it up.

As with any used car, "as-is" purchase, it is important to find out before hand what things like this mean so you aren't paying extra for nothing...
