My new husband came here on a J-1 visa; isn't subject to 2 yr home return. His trip was facilitated by an American company with offices in his homeland. This company required its participants to sign a paper saying they understand that they cannot change status "for any reason" while in the US. At the time he did not intend to change status while here, so thought nothing of it. Now that we are married and want to apply for adjustment of status, we are wondering whether this paper has any validity to INS. It was signed during an orientation meeting in his home country before leaving there, and is an internal document of the facilitating company, which works with USIA in getting visas for exchange students. Can this paper affect us?
