I was curious, my father has paid child support for me up until I was 18. I was wondering if there is any sort of law that states that he has to help with the college funds part of my life now, basically, if it's illegal for him to deny the money I need to help put myself through college...Any replies on this will be great, thanks :)

It is only "illegal" to deny an adult offspring support IF a court order says one is obligated to pay.

Dear, even many of us who grew up in intact families completed college without our parent's financial support. My dad, for example, became terminally ill before I started college and provided no financial support. Don't let your college education depend upon your parents choices or abilities. Even if it takes longer to get it done, you CAN complete college on your own.

This statement does not make sense if you put yourself through college, by its wording means no one else pays for it. You yourself pay, not Daddy.

In fact, PA is very clear on this. Unless he was court ordered during the divorce to continue support and/or pay for college, you are legally an emancipated adult when you turn 18 and have graduated from high school.

So no, there is no law. PA is one of the wiser states out there in that it didn't agree with it's sister states regarding this issue. He can help, he can completely ignore your requests, whatever he wants. It's his money and he can do with it as he pleases.

I see you're not trying to force your mother to do this.

In fact, it is considered unconstitutional (as it should be) to force a divorced parent to pay for this when we don't force married parents to do it. Here is a link to the case: http://www.dadsnow.org/legal/curtis.htm

It is Bonita Kline Curtis vs. Philip Kline, in case the link doesn't work and you need to search it out on google.

Not to assume to much I will ask if you are close with your father or not? I have a father whom I have not seen for ever almost and I always thought that to get even I could ge him to pay back child support to pay for my education as well, kind of a get even thing on my part. Even recently with my own family having its issues I thought that that money could still help and then I thought that I needed to let go and make positives happen for myself. I really hope your situation is not similar to this.

If you are just hoping, because it is indeed always nice to have the financial bonus you really need to take this time to learn how to make your money work for you becasue it will be a required skill in the future. Good luck to you and all the best :)
