What is the name of your state? Montana

I got a call from collection agency stating I now owed with interest over $5000 to citibanksears visa card I did once have. I thought I paid it off in 2004 when I lived in ND. I had my credit report ran in Feb 07 and this citibanksears visa showed last activity date 2001 and a $0 balance. (from experian) all other credit report companies did NOT show this card what so ever. Now I did have the card and debt, thought I paid it but I could be wrong. I believe the statute of limitations here in MT is 5 yrs on open accounts, but it stopped when I moved to ND, for 4 yrs. So its only been a total of 3 yrs. But the credit reports show nothing. Do I accept what the collection agency is telling me?? Or what?

There is nothing wrong with requesting validation. Send the CA validation letter. There is a good sample at helpwithcollections.com/samples.php
