What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? GA

About 8 years ago my former girlfriend fraudulently opened a credit card account in my name at the clothing store where she worked. I did not find out about the account for 2 years, when I started receiving collection notices. I obtained the original credit application and receipts from the company, which clearly showed my girlfriend’s signature on all. I disputed the account and waited. The company declared that the account was legitimate for whatever reasons and sent the claim to a collection agency. I sent all of my documents to a total of three collection agencies over the past 6 years, and each has returned the account to the originator. Yesterday I received a notice from fourth collection agency.
This has been going on for a long time, and has adversely affected my credit for all of these years. The amount is minimal, but I have kept disputing out of principal. I am wondering if I need to just pay the stupid thing off and be done with it, but I don’t know if this will be removed from my credit history or will continue to plague me.
Any advice anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

I would send the OC and the CA an intent to sue letter for defamation of character among other things giving them 30 days to resolve. Wait 30 days and if there is no response sue them in State court. They will most likely settle out of court or offer to remove this from your credit. If not they are risking a very healthy judgment against them for gross incompetence.
