What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? IL

To cut throught the chase I am startled, scared, and don't know what to expect. After reading what I have to say can someone please let me know what I am doing wrong.

In the last week of January I received contact from my company the 'Karen called and asked that I call her back'. Not knowing who Karen was I called the number and was shocked for 2 reasons 1st it was a debt collector, 2nd I didn't know I had this debt. I was informed by Karen that the debt was $380 so I said okay where can I send payment, the responce was I could send $502 ( 380 + legal fees and interest ) to... I made the payment and have proof the check cleared my account. The payment was completed on February 4.

Today February 14, I receive notification from my company that Molli was trying to reach me, again not knowing who on earch Molli was I returned the call. Come to find out Molli had a court summons to issue me. I asked her if she could deliver it to my house the following day when I would be at home and she said no. I was made to feel I had no choice but to provide directions to where I work for her to deliver these papers. The debt is paid in full why could they possibly want me in court?

Why do I feel uneasy about this entire scandel? Is this the way it is suppose to work? Can collectors call and leave messages with the company you work for that do not include why they are calling? I don't know what is harder to believe the fact that they can call my boss, possibly getting me fired or that I have to go to court when the debt is paid in full? Has anyone gone through this before?

Thank you,

How do you know the lawsuit is for the same debt ?? What is the company that "karen" worked for ??

You're saying you paid a debt collector for a debt you didn't even KNOW was yours ???? How do you know that it was, in fact, YOUR debt ?? These people LIE for a living !! You should NEVER pay a debt over the phone, you should NEVER pay a debt collector unless you have PROOF its YOUR debt !!!

IF you paid this in full and you have proof, then getting the lawsuit dismissed will be a slam dunk. If you have NO proof, or they just extorted a payment from you that wasn't for ALL of it, then you may be stuck.

How do you know who this "MOLLY" was ?? Have you called the courthouse to find out if there even IS a VALID lawsuit filed against you ???

Debt collectors will hound you wherever they can find you if you let them. If you tell them NOT to call you at work because your employer forbids it, then they must stop, but you must follow that up with a letter. Debt collectors are bound by the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, FDCPA, and I strongly urge you to read it.

Karen and Molli both work for a company called ProCom. The source of the Debt was from an auto accident in 1999. Evidently 2 seperate medical bills were generated one for 1300 and this second one for 380. I paid off the larger of the two the 1300 in 2000. I was not aware of the second bill until I spoke with Karen. I requested and received from Karen verified information regarding the originality of the Debt and was able to see the oversight on my part of the 2 seperate bills from my old records. I guess the biggest problem I have is that I was never contacted about this debt until they had moved it to their legal department?

I have not called the courthouse and will first thing in the morning to verify the court date. I will read the link thank you for the prompt response and good advice.

Thank you,

That is right never do anything over the phone this is a good reason why! I worked for a company in Alabama, went to work one day and my boss told me there was a call for me from a collector for a new car I had-So I called them and told them they have the worng person! They then called my house, well then I got really mad and told them I am not the person they are looking for and never call me again! They called again! I asked them for the persons complete name they were looking for it was the same as mine,I asked them for thier main office number he started to get nasty with me but gave it to me so-then this person said is this your social security number - I was shocked- no it was not mine ( gave me someone else SS# ) and I let him know that they are going by this persons name to find them and I am not that person so if you call me one more time I will sue you!I called the main office at the number he gave me and told them what this person that is working for them did-they were SHOCKED about the SS# of this other person being given to anyone! They could not apologize fast enough and I did let them know to CALL ME ONE MORE TIME!They never have!I did call the SS office and told them what had happened so that they could let this person in (Ohio) know what these people did.We do have the same name! So you might not be the person they are looking for if they are going by the name and not SS#.Beware of collectors that call.If you are not sure why they are calling you-ask for the main office number or something else so you can verify it is you they are looking for.Sorry I just ready your last post it was your bill-but still always beware over the phone.

This is the kind of instance which has made us aware of the fact that we dont HAVE to pay anything over the phone. Dont give out your information or anything.
I know someone who had a similar situation---they had a credit card they owed on, a collection agency contacted them and they paid the bill. It went through the bank, and still didnt show as paid on their credit report. Then, some time later they got another notice saying they still owed---and they once again paid. They ended up paying over $5,000, and its STILL not cleared up. And, they are also having to pay taxes on that now.
CA's are stupid! Course, they obviously get paid to be that way. :D
