Is it legal for Comcast to make me responsible for a 3 year old bill of my husbands that I was NOT joint on? They say that I was put on as an "authorized user" and there fore I am resposible for the bill. I have current Comcast Cable service and I noticed in October that there had been a transfer of 242.00 on to my account. I called Comcast and was told that they did not know where it had came from but would do an investigation. I called again in November and was told the same thing. By December the amount had still not been removed nor could anyone tell me what it was from. In December I am getting disconnect notices telling me that unless I pay the full amount then my service would be disconnected. I called again in December and was told the same thing as I had been previously. I called again on Friday and after being left on hold for over 20 minutes I was asked if I knew Justin. I said yes, that he was my husband. They first said that he had written a bad check to them and that was what the amount was, I told them that they were wrong, because I was the only one who paid this bill, and I had only sent one check and it was for $57.40 in September. Then she put me back on hold and came back about 10 minutes later and told me that my husband has a account and that because we are married and living in the same house that I must pay his bill to be able to keep my service. I was in shock. I NEVER signed up with him for his service. I told the woman that I did not know that I was his authorized user and how could I be held responsible. She just kept telling me the same thing, that if I did not pay the bill then they would disconnet my service and send me to collections. I asked to speak with a supervisor and she put me on hold again, 8 minutes later she came back on and told me that there was not one available, I asked her to have one call me. No one has yet to contact me. I was told that I must go into the local office and prove that I did not live with my husband during this time. Why must I prove anything. Its not my bill. The only way that I think the linked us was the one check I sent them, we have a joint checking account. HELP.

thanks,

As far as I am concern, Authorized Users are not responsible

I am not a lawyer, and certaintly laws do change from state to state, but as far as I am concern, they can't hold an authorized user (AU) liable or "hostage" for one's debts.

In my experience credit companies won't even report negative information to an AU credit bureau (CB). Citibank and American Express for example do collect and report to AUs CBs. But they never have reported, in my case, negative information. At the point when the account went "south". they just stopped reporting any additional information and a simple "Not my account" to the CB would remove it completely. This one, in fact, is NOT your account.

Bottom line... contact the regulating authority for Comcast in your area. It might be a department of your city or county, or in rare occassions, your state's Public Service Commission. Anyhow, it should be listed on your bill or else Comcast must provide you with their name and number upon request.

GOOD LUCK!!!
