Company website

I designed our company website, mostly on company time, but some on my own. They want me to make a backup to be put in a safe place. I fear being laid off. It has happened to me before. Do I have to make the backup and do I have any legal rights to the web site, graphics I made while working for the company? Can they do anything to me if I just wipe it out? Last time there were layoffs, they laid me off and kept people with less experience, with fewere skills, and who had been with the company for a shorter time.

Unless you have a signed written agreement to the contrary, the web site is the property of the company. Their request for a backup is valid and you do have to comply with it. They may or may not choose to terminate you when your work is done. That is their right and you can't interfere with their exercise of that right.
