I am in Maryland. There were four autos rear-end hitting one by one. I am the fourth. Nobody was injured at this accident. It was caused by the first auto which made an emergency brake. My insurace expired at that time. Now the second driver is suing the third drive, me and her own insurace company. She wants me to pay her 500,000 for her treatment and metal compensation. How can I do? Help, please!!!

If you hit someone from the rear, then you are generally always found at fault (although I have seen juries go the other way).

You need to get a really good lawyer.

That is not my fault in the accident. The first or the second driver made a sudden brake. Do you think the judge will think that is my fault? Plus, she asks so much money that is I can not afford obviously. And I have to pay the attorney. It really desperated.
Where I can find a good lawyer?

were you cited for following too closely?

The police report said it is me caused the accident. But it is not true. The head of the third car(it is ahead of me) got much damage than its rear. Do you think it can prove that the third car hitted the second one first and then I hitted it?

You are supposed to keep your car under control at all times.

If you hit the rearend of another car, then you did not have your car under control.

Therefore, you are liable for the accident.

Should I be responsible for all cars ahead of me(three cars) or just the car ahead of me? Thanks.

You are only responsible for the damage you caused. So, if you only hit one car, then you would be responsible only for the damages to that car.

Appreciate you. But I found two replies against your answer.

"As a general rule, the car that begins a chain reaction by striking one car in the rear, pushing him into the car in front of him, etc. is responsible for damage and injuries done to all cars and occupants. However, insurance companies use lots of arguments not to pay their full amount. "

"This is the same outcome as where your house catches on fire and burns a neighboring house and you did not lead to, cause or worsen the fire--the first house that caught fire is liable. "

I am confused. Could you let me know the authority because I am a Pre Pro. I am defending for myself. Appreciate!!!

What two cars were the first to hit each other? When car #4 hit car #3, was this the first collision or did a collision already happen?

From your description of this, it sounds like it's entirely your fault. If none of the other drivers were cited, and they all had insurance, I'd expect you to be sued by their insurance companies to recover whatever they pay out. These drivers can also sue you separately for damages. I'd get a lawyer asap.

Yes, the other three drivers can sue you, but there were two accidents that had happened before you hit the third car.

You cannot, of course, be liable for the first two accidents, UNLESS you caused more damage to the first two folks.
