I believe you are confused. It'll be on the court record, but I believe the reason for having it expunged would be for credit reasons.

my ex almost went to jail twice, both times on the day of court his mom wrote out a check for the arrears and he walked out a free man

Sorry, I was a little vague. I was only refering to the criminal contempt charge.They'll keep the money paid on record. I think the op is asking if he can have the fact that he was found guilty erased from his record like it never happened. A judge would have the RIGHT to do this, but it could encourage that person to repeat the offense, since there was no previous record of the first contempt. Most judges are going to be much harder on you if you repeat the offense than they are the first time.
