And while you may be right, the scope of the General Contractor's agreement would be a fact for a judge to decide. Which would mean a length court battle, attorneys and a much more complicated case than it needs to be. And one you MAY not win.

Of course, if you have months to devote to this and money to burn, that's your right.

But my liability should be somewhat limited, correct? The dispute is still around $600. Worst case, I would have to pay attorney fees and court costs.

Did you not read my post where I said send an offer to settle for $200 certified (RRR)?

I understand. My concern is that if I offer to settle, he can refuse the offer, and then, my position is now exposed to a larger liability since I am acknowledging fault.

You are only acknowledging your desire to settle for the work completed. Nothing more.

Listen, from the tone of your posts I would strongly advise you to sit down with an attorney and discuss this matter. You keep trying to litigate the case on an internet forum which simply can't be done.

I've given you my take on the situation. It's up to you what to do.
