Actually, JETX provided accurate information in his two responses to the OP. DJohnson is correct - if you can't provide accurate information or if you just honestly don't know, please don't respond at all. Speculations are worthless and confusing. At worst, they are argumentative and detract from the OP's original questions.

let me quote something u said before we go into discussion who is an idiot here:

QUOTE:
Mentioning arrest is ONE OF THE BIGGEST violations of Fair Debt Collection in the US (does not apply to Canada or UK though). They will excuse themselves and hang up. After that REPORT THIS IMMEDIATELY to fair Debt Collection watchdog in the US!

**you are an idiot and they probably had a good laugh at your expense.
END OF QUOTE.

Now let me quote something from the government web site itself (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/fdc.htm) which I am sure u will have a harder time of accusing of idiocy:

QUOTE:
Debt collectors also may not state that:

-you will be arrested if you do not pay your debt;
-they will seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages, unless the collection agency or creditor intends to do so, and it is legal to do so; or
-actions, such as a lawsuit, will be taken against you, when such action legally may not be taken, or when they do not intend to take such action.
END OF QUOTE.

They probably did have a laugh as u mentioned (since they r so stupid to have mentioned arest in the 1st place) but hardly at my expense.

As for "idiot", u may want to take a look in the mirror. U may see one there. With all due respect of course.

Are you really this stupid, or is this some kind of 'con'.
Of course, no one on this forum said that a debt collector threatening arrest was acceptable conduct, or that it was not in violation of the FDCPA. What I did say was in response to your erroneous statement that this was "ONE OF THE BIGGEST violations". It is NOT one of the biggest violations... but is a violation.
Do you understand the error in your statement??
By the way, it is the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act.... not "Fair Debt Collection". Collection is NOT illegal..... violations of the Act.... is actionable.

I guess that since you are too lazy to spell out whole words (insisting on using 'internet slang' instead of proper English -- a sign or poor education and disrespect for yourself and others), maybe you just thought was somehow another 'slang' term, huh??

Tell them you will not pay, sue me. Don't call me again. They will sue you or not. But at this point do you care? your credit is probably already ruined. If they sue, hire a lawyer, they will try to settle at a reasonable amount to avoid court which will cost them more effort and money. You will most likely be at the 1400.00 which you say you owe plus your lawyer fees of 200.00. which is alot lower than the 4500.00 they are claiming.Or since you already between a rock and a hard place, turn down the offers until you can't get it any lower. It is highly unlikely they want to fight you in a court, where you live and vote, with a lawyer. The lawyers on this site will probably disagree with my opinion, but how many of these go to court? And why so few?

poor education????

As I said above, since ppl reckon my posts r confusing, I am no longer posting on the matter in question.

I apologise for an off-topic post but Mr JETX: No matter how proficient u may be in legal matters, the way u sound shows that u r a complete tosser and retard socially - excuse my language. Poor education??? how about UC Berkeley and London School of Economics here. And what have u got may I ask? If u were as bright as u claim u wud at least google to see what "politeness" means, as u obviously never picked that up as a child.

C´mon slag me off for "internet slang" abbreviations commonly accepted all over the world these days - I am sure "proper English" is not something u wud ever have a slightest notion of :D

My apologies to all other members having to read thru all this bickering.

For someone who claims to be so 'well educated' I'm surprised you would sink to the childish 'internet slang' of the juvenile scriptkiddies that use it ! Maybe it serves for quick chatting on IRC channels, but its a pain in the butt to read and understand in any other venue. There are a LOT of people who have no idea what it is you're writing, its like trying to translate a foreign language. You're not doing your UC Berkely and London education one bit of justice.. sorry.

Are you really so lazy that you don't have the energy to type a few measly letters on a keyboard??? Christ, what a waste of oxygen you must be.

Yeah, right??? Probably a dropout from 3rd grade. If you were in fact a graduate at anything, they clearly didn't educate you in the proper use of English.... and spelling.

And what have u got may I ask?
I was a Green Beret with over 25 kills. I then returned to school on the GI bill and got a BSME, then my masters. I got bored in Engineering, and returned to get my MD. I specialized in cardiothoracic practice, for a few years, then returned for my JD. Currently holding several degrees... with three Doctorates.

If u were as bright as u claim u wud at least google to see what "politeness" means, as u obviously never picked that up as a child.
At least I am smart enough to know how to spell 'you'.

This is quickly no longer holding its 'fun' quotient. Looks like you may be going 'by-by' shortly. :D

Gee, you have gotten so much BAD information in this thread, I don't know where to start in trying to CORRECT these idiots!!

Who me? Guilt by proximity? :D
I only suggested getting familiar with the FDCPA.
If that is inappropriate, I'm not clear how.

I will admit it sounds impressive - and I'm not being sarky. One question though - how did u manage to get three doctorates being as rude to people as you are? Or you do not need to bother once you are on "GI bill"? I may have been wrong in what I posted but I was not the one who started calling names, I am sorry but the way you slag me off is indeed worth of a wanker - you used that word first anyway :)

As for "by-by", it'll be a pity but if that is the only tool in your arsenal for dealing with people who do not take s**t from you, go ahead, flex your muscle. Count it as your kill 26 if you want. Were the previous 25 of the same variety?

One more comment - on the matter itself. When we start arguing about what the BIGGEST lie coming from debt collectors is, remember that it is rather subjective. Many people would consider false threats of arrest to be the biggest lie. Me included. Many people won't, you apparently are one of them. That is fair enough and is no reason to start calling each other names.

Ladynred, you helped me loads on a few occasions, and many thx for this comment. Point taken.

On a separate note, JETX, you may want to take a look at this to see how normal polite people get their point across.

A witty response mate, very nice :) you have a good sense of humour - full credit for that.

I suggest we stop our bickering right here. I apologise for quick typing - I honestly thought it is a commonly accepted way everywhere now. If I may suggest something - let us try to avoid being rude and slagging people off - it does not glorify anyone. Thanks

internet slang

I should perhaps explain why I was abbreviating so much - have to apologise in advance for a completely off-topic post.

here in the UK (and everywhere in Europe really) text messaging on mobile phones (SMS) has really turned into a boom with people largely preferring to text someone on the go, rather than phoning. It has loads to do with the fact that a text message from a UK mobile to anywhere in the world will cost you 10 pence - much cheaper than an average phone call.

Obviously you have to abbreviate when you type 10 text messages every day. Therefore "tonight" becomes "2n8", and "looking forward to see you mate" turns into "lkng 4wrd 2 c u m8" :)

It is no reflection on anyone's education etc..... Recently revealed text messages from Prince Henry to one of his tarts are typed in exactly the same way.....

So I thought it is a universally accepted practice now. Especially since my old mates from CA type very similarly in their e mails to me.

Sorry about that
