Can a creditor call your friends and inlaws and tell them that you are in default and that they are going to repos the car. I am only a few weeks over dues due to Christmas and etc.

No they can't. Do they not have your phone number? The only reason I can think of why they would be calling friends and relatives (your references probably) was because they don't have a phone# or they have received returned mail, but if you are only 14 days behind that is very strange.

I would contact them immediately, see what is going on, get payment arrangements and also let them know of what happened. Did they get a name of the rep that called and what they said. The company should have notes of the call on their system.

Calls any third part about your debt like friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. However they can contact your attorney, a consumer reporting agency, the creditor, the attorney of the creditor, or the attorney of the debt collector.
FDCPA Section 805. (b) $1000.00 (Above courtesy of creditinfocenter).

When the collector called, were they just looking for you or, did they state that you owed money to the third-parties. If they mentioned ANYTHING about you owing a debt they are in violation of the above referenced law.

I think we are talking original creditor here...
Good catch.... and you are correct. The ORIGINAL creditor has no obligation to abide by the FDCPA.
