What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

I am starting a technical service website. I can't send a common invoice before rendering service because of parts (don't know what I'll need at first) and because I charge an hourly rate. (and don't know how long it will take at first). My worry is that sending an invoice after I have done the work and put together a bill will result in the customer not paying and me being able to do nothing about it.

What is the best way to guarantee payment? Do I need some kind of contract or waiver for them to sign ahead of time? If so, is there a generic one I don't have to pay a lawyer to draw up and can just put my companies name on? Thanks

An hour or two of an attorney's time would be money well spent. They could address your specific needs and answer any questions you might have..

I charge a reasonable, fixed diagnosis fee up front and allow them to apply the fee to the final bill if they complete the order with me.
