What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
CALIFORNIA

So a guy came in and paid in cash to rent a car. He put down his personal information inc driver's license #, where he lives ( he's a dad and his daughter lives with him) (the house by the way is under her name). All that information.

How one day he totals the car and decides to not bother to pay for it. A friend told me that they took money out of his house (keep in mind, the house is under his daughter and she makes all the payments).

Is this legal? How can the bank or someone take money from someone else who isn't even involved in totaling the vehicle?

Does debt pass on through family?

You don't have all the information. Because of that, you can't pass on all of the information. Because of that, there is no way we can answer your question.

It's really none of your business anyway...

The only way that they could have put a lien on the house was if the guy's name was ALSO on the deed to the house.

Debt does NOT pass down to family. However, debt must come out of the deceased's estate before any of the estate is transferred to the heirs.
