What is the name of your state? Oregon

Hello, I have a question about minors working.

My 16 year old son just started working part time (between 15 and 20 hours a week). He brought home the W-2 form and we filled it out putting *0* as the number of exemptions because he is still my dependant. But today at school one of his friends told him that he is exempt from tax - and that no taxes except social security should be deducted and that I was supposed to have written "exempt" on the form, as he is under 18 and would be making less than the threshold amount. Is this true?
I dont want him (or me) to get in trouble by putting the wrong thing down for taxes.
If anyone is knowledgeable about this, I would appreciate information about it.
Thank you :)

You will not be in trouble for listing 0 exemptions instead of identifying your son as exempt from all taxes. While he may ultimately be entitled to a refund of the federal taxes withheld, he is definitely not required to complete his W-4 form as being exempt from all taxes.

You did the right thing. If you go out the the IRS website, www.irs.gov, you can get more information. ;)

If he is working 15-20 hours per week, he WILL probably have a tax liability, which will make it ILLEGAL for him to claim exempt.

His friends have no idea what they are talking about.

Leave it at "single zero", it will be fine.
