Three years ago I received a phone solicitation call from Discover to open an account. I expressly told them I would NOT open an account over the phone, but that I would review written information. (I was shopping for a new card as I was unhappy with my current one.) Well, of course, I received shiny new cards within a matter of days. I destroyed them immediately. Long story shortened, I made many, many calls to close the account, yet received charges for card protection and then late fees for the card protection. Eventually, they reversed those charges and I received two or three zero balance statements (more phone calls to close account before statements stopped altogether). Months later, I receive a zero balance statement. I make more calls, eventually the statements stop. Then, in February of this year, I financed a new vehicle. During the purchase, I reviewed my credit report at the car dealership. I saw the Discover account listed and it reflected $0 as the balance and closed by my request. Unbelievably, not long after, I receive "junk" mail from Discover referring to "your account". I called, yep, I have an account. So, I again asked it to be closed. Then, I received another zero balance statement about two months ago. I called, demanded proof that I had ever opened the account and demanded it be closed. Although I received no proof (they told me they would have a copy of my signature on an application--I assured them they did not) I did receive written confirmation of the closing. However, there is verbiage in this letter that indicates that the account is "eligible to be evaluated to reopen" once every 30 days. Given the history of this damn thing to resurrect itself once every few months or so, I fully expect it to reappear before long.
How can I assure that the account is closed permanently--before I Disc
ver that I again have an open account? Thanks, lkc15507
