What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oregon.
I will try to keep this short and to the point. I know it's preferable that the persons involved would be posting for themselves. I am asking this in hopes of being able to offer advice to a family member, who is feeling completely overwhelmed by the fact their marriage is falling apart.
Situation:
A couple has been married 7 years, and own a home together which is still under mortgage. There are no children. During the marriage, the husband was a CEO for the first two years and by choice unemployed the other five. The wife was by choice unemployed two years while attending university and the "bread winner" for the other five. They share one vehicle.
My questions:
What is the likely-hood of either party having to pay alimony and if so which party? How would division of property be handled? Would an attorney be advisable? Do the woman's student loans (in her name only) factor into the equation?
If there is anything I've left out of the situation that needs to be known in order to address my questions, please just let me know.
