What is the name of your state? Tn.I have rented my home for 2-1/2 yrs, we signed no lease, etc. We had a dog when we moved in. I have had a couple of issues with 2 neighbors about the dogs, but seems to have been resolved. We have a lab and a black and tan coon dog, which has 6-2wk old pups, they have a pen they stay in, but of course we have to let them out for exercise and bathroom, etc. Last night, my landlord called my mother and told her they'd had several complaints for a while and we are gonna have to get rid of the dogs. We are all just heartbroken over this, plus how quick could we get rid of 8 dogs! We have been looking for a house to buy lately anyway.
But, since we signed no contract, etc concerning pets and we have lived here over 2yrs, can they make us get rid of the dogs? What about our rights as pet owners, etc. I feel like it's because we rent and don't own the home, people think they can just do us anyway. There are lots of dogs in the neighbor hood, there's no leash law, and a dog jumped in the pen and got ours pregnet! Buying a house is something we can't rush into, and we can't just find homes for the dogs, the pups are only 2 wks old, what can we do, do we have any legal rights on this matter? We keep them put up the majority of the time also. any help would be appreciated.

**A: you have no lease so L can give you notice to vacate period, dogs or no dogs.

Ah, the homeguru has such a clever answer again. Does anyone have any legal advice or other suggestions, I know there are laws on renter's rights, etc. What are my rights regarding this matter, as a renter? No BS answers please, I need some sound advice. This is an important issue to me and my children especially, they love those dogs!Thanks...

If your LL has told you to get rid of your pets and you fail to do so expect to be given proper notice to move . There are no laws dealing with your 4 legged friends state statutes are written for HUMANS . Your choice give proper NOTICE and find a new place OR wait till the decision is made for you .

***Your landlord would have to give you a 30 day notice if you refused to get rid of your furkids. So doing the math, the pups will probably be old enough by that time to be given to new homes. Why not start looking for something to buy? By the time your eviction is processed (which could take a couple of months) you could be closing on your new home and this would be a non issue. No one has given you bad or BS advice, its just the way these things go. Good luck to you, I hope you find a place to buy***

*****EDITED TO ADD: Please get your dog spayed. You have no one to blame except yourself for her pregnancy, besides they are healthier and live longer!********

**A: and what part of my answer do you think is BS and unsound advice.
My response is backed up by the TN L/T law. Look it up for yourself.
