I am from Upstate NY. Every other weekend I visit NYC and visit my GF. Most of the time I leave on Sundays, however occasionally I have stayed till Monday or Tuesday. When I do and am parked on the side of the street to be sweeped the following morning--i always get up and double park the car on the other side of the street, Normal Right? I have been doing this for several years now.

However, Recently my GF moved. She now lives on the middle of a block where on the corner there exists a school. I have noticed one regulation in particualar b/c of the school, that we cannot park in front of the school from 7am-4pm on school days. I have always respected this, and in fact was parked there last night. So i got up early today on my day off and moved the car. Since this time corresponded with the street sweeping times I figured I will just wait till the hour hits and double park like I always have, no signs warned otherwise. There was even a parking officer waiting to give tickets to those who disobey the street sweeping regulations, and she said nothing to me even though she saw me double park where i did.

Anyway, I run upstairs and took care of some business for a little of an hour. The I ran downstairs and figured i would simply slide my car over to the other side and wait till the time expires prohbiting parking due to sweeping.

To my suprise however, I founf a ticket for double parking with the comment school block on it. I was not the only one that got one, in fact i spoke with three others from out of the area who did the same thing. The ticket is $115, which is ridiculous considering how responsible I am with paying attention to parking signs.

However, in this case there was no sign prohibbiting double parking during street sweeping b/c i was on a school block.

What are my options other than simply giving in and paying this ticket. You would think there would be a sign right?

What does everyone think?

Unless the ticket is defective on its face*, you're going to have to pay it. Despite the fact that its "overlooked" in certain neighborhoods, it is illegal to double park anywhere in NYC at any time. Leaving your car unattended while you do so means you have absolutely no defense. The fact that a school was nearby is completely irrelevant. Sorry.
