What is the name of your state? MN

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post in, but I couldn't find anything else that would fit my case.
This is the story:
My friend and I are 18, well he's 19 or something now I'm not sure. We went to a local night club called Escape. We get in without any alcohol prior to entering. We mingle and what not. Then my friend wants a drink, so i ask one of my older friends to get him a drink. Instead of buying him a drink, she gives me the wristband(showing that i'm 21+). I wash off the x on our hands and buy a drink. The bartender didn't even check if I had a wristband or not, just served it right up. I walk around with it, and then i hand it over to my friend and he drinks it quickly not to be noticed. He puts the cup down and we stand around that area talking to friends for a little bit. Ok, long story short, they caught us, took my id for giving him alcohol, took his id for drinking, and they cut it up in halves. Are they allowed to do those things? Shouldn't that be a thing(cutting up IDs) that only people at the dmv, or cops can do?

Q: Are they allowed to do those things?

A: I doubt it.

Q: Shouldn't that be a thing(cutting up IDs) that only people at the dmv, or cops can do?

A: I don't answer hypothetical questions.

You're right - they did not have the legal right to do that ... so, you're going to call the police, right?

Oh! Wait! That would mean confessing to illegally purchasing and consuming alcohol! Hmm ... that makes it kinda difficult to call the police.

It sounds like you're going to have to suck it up and fork over the $20 or so for a new license or ID card.

Yeap, the responses you got are correct! Did they have the right? Probably not, but the option was to call the cops and have you locked up, which would have been a whole lot worse. Would they since they were the ones that sold it and saw it? Probably not, that risks their liquor license and their financial prosperity. Will they let you in again? Probably not! In VA you can get online to the DMV and just order a new license by saying you lost it or $5. Take it as a lesson learned, you got off easy. Just say you lost it and get it replaced!
