What is the best defense against this violation? I had never heard of this law when the officer stopped me. There was no requlatory sign posted indicating that this was an unlwful procedure and there is no mention of this violation in the rules of the road booklet that a new driver is tested on when obtaining a license in Virgina.

Does any of this matter to a judge? Will I just be wasting time going to court to try to fight this?

What did you do, drive through a parking lot to make a right thus avoiding the light?
If so, I do not know the exact law, but it is avoiding a traffic device by not using the proper flow of traffic lanes (or something like that).

If that is what you did, sure you could go before a judge, but he will still tell you that you are guilty- and then you will have to pay court fees on top of the fine...

Ignorance of the law is not a defense, so I'd suggest not using that if you decide to contest the ticket. If you post the exact section you were cited for, we might be able to offer more information.

Incidentally, the common term around here for people who avoid lights by cutting across (whatever, but usually corner gas stations) is "g@ssholes" :D
