I am a Tennessee resident. I was traveling through Georgia and got pulled over. I realized my drivers license was expired, did not know prior. Recieved a misdemeanor, my very first one. I feel it isn't best to request my charge be reduced to an infraction. Is this a good plan? Should I hire a lawyer. I'd like to avoid hiring a lawyer because I don't want to pay the cost, but if it will increase my chance of having my charge reduced it may be worth it. Please help. Thanks.

When charged with a crime, especially one distant from where you live, a lawyer in the jurisdiction in which you are charged is a good idea. Most local attorneys know the court and prosecutor and may be able to dispense with this without you actually having to return to face the court.
