Hello,
My friend came to the US on a F1. He was expected to graduate in August but did not. His F-1 visa has also expired. As such, he is completing online courses. According to the international center at the university he is not allowed to stay in the US if he is not a full time student. He cannot afford the costs for a semester even though he only has to pay for the remaining course load.

I remember that my passport has never been checked when leaving the US, so do you think he could stay for another 5 months till he finishes his online classes? As my passport and I-20, and visa have never been looked at in departing the US, shouldn't he be safe in staying longer than he is allowed to? Or is there a chance someone might ask him to show his visa status in the US upon departing?

Thank you in advance.

A friend trying to help another....

Depends on where you are departing to .. if you get on an internation flight then the passport is always checked and the number taken. If you are going to Canada then no it is not checked.

The problem with staying in the US when your visa has expired is that if you are caught, you can be subjected to a 3/5 or 10 year ban.

Thanx for your reply.
Ys, I was speaking of an international flight to germany.
What number were you speaking of? I know the airport is expected to check the 1-94 card, but from my own experience mine never has.

Hope to hear from you.

I would also like to add that when you visit canada, your passport IS checked. Both my friend and I have indian passports but reside in germany, and I my passport was checked when I tried to visit canada. As I did not have a visa I was not allowed in.

Every passport has a number. The airlines record this number.

You are correct about Canada, I did not even think about your nationality ..
