F-1 Visa Renewal from Mexico

Hi there,

I have a general question regarding the renewal of my F-1 visa. Here goes:

I am an F-1 student with a visa that is supposed to expire on the 26th of December 2000 but my I-20 is valid for another two years after that (I initially got a visa for 2 years instead of 4). Can I go to Mexico or Canada BEFORE the expiration of my visa (say in november) to apply for a new one or do I HAVE TO wait for my current visa to expire to get a new visa. I am planing to travel during late december-early january and would like to take care of this visa problem before that. Please advise.
