I am in Colorado, and I need to know if I have any legal rights by taking my father to court for mental, emotional, and verbal abuse that has lasted for years up to the present. Because of him I feel like I can't do anything for myself, I am extremely insecure, I have no self confidence, no self worth, or self esteem. My father is a poor communicator and he has his own mental issues that are taken out on me, can I at least ask judge to order that he get a pyscological evaluation as well as taking a communication course? This is just part of a long list of issues. Please help, I don't know what to do or who to turn to. Thank you for your time.

My response:

Have you sought mental health counseling? Your issue, at this point, is more emotional than legal. With mental health counseling, you'll learn the "tools" you'll need to have, and how to use those tools to protect your emotional well-being.

Thanks for writing.

If you are old enough to live on your own, then do so, or move in with friends, anything to get away from his control. As for taking him to court, once you are out of his house and away from his control, then you should be able to take control of your own life and learn how to manage your own affairs.... Don't dwell on what he has done to you. I know it is hard, but you can do it, if you really want to- You can do anything you want once you set your mind to it. And as IAAL has suggested, try going to some counseling.
