What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

This is a hypothetical or general question, and does not pertain to anyone in prison.
I would like to know, as a general rule, does the person in prison have to ask for parole? Or does the parole board schedule it when they become eligible?

Thanks for the info. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Although there may be a few examples of such, it is generally a state law matter.

For example, you have 1 year left of a sentence, you are diagnosed with cancer, with 3 months to live, you can file a Petition for early release with the sentencing judge/court and it may or may not be granted.
