I think that she was thinking more along the lines of how will the necessary and immediate bills get paid while waiting for the money to be distributed. She has a valid point. Perhaps her husband would at least be willing to make her POD on an account with sufficient money to cover one or two months worth of bills.

She might approach her husband to designate the accounts as TOD or POD (presuming her state uses one or the other). That way the assets become hers immediately upon the death of her husband but she has no access to them before that time.

That presumes a level of trust that does not exist in this relationship. Such a suggestion will go over like a lead balloon with him, I suspect.

Or perhaps I am just overly skeptical.

OP and her husband need counselling. And OP should prepare to protect herself, should marriage counselling fail and they divorce. She needs to document what has been going on, financially.
