What is the name of your state? Mi. what if i don't believe in some of the things the union represents like planned parenthood for example, does something like this give me the right to quit my union?

That depends whether you are working in a closed shop or an open shop.

If you are in a closed shop and membership in the union is a condition of employment, there are plenty of union-free work places out there and you are completely free to pursue job opportunities in any of them. Only about 10% of all employees belong to a union and that number continues to decline.

Its Michigan so its closed shop. You have the right to alter your union dues so political activity money isn't taken out of it. Look into it. Then of course remember its the union that gets you the pay and benefits you earn right now.

why get out

Planned parent hood has nothing to do with union representation. The main function of your union is bargaining your contract and grievance handling. Attend your meetings I am quite sure none of your dues go to support planned parent hood. The government watches our unions very closely and your union files Lm-2 forms every year. They are public record. You can find them on the department of Labor Website. Be thankful you have a union and get involved

I don't blame you

Michigan is a closed shop state. You have to belong. However, you don't have to let your money go to Planned Parenthood. The Union is doing this with other money--not dues.

Where I live, I refused the United Way because regardless of how you want money to be spent, it goes where they put it. Total payments and a percentage to each bunch in the charity system. The national UW (when an exec isn't going to jail or living like Trump on your donations) supports everything. Michigan is pretty liberal so you are probably screwed on where you want the union to spend money like abortion provider Planned Parenthood.

There is no such thing as a closed shop; it is illegal.

You do have the right to demand that the union not collect that portion of your dues that goes for political activity. Therefore, there is no need to get out of the union. In fact, by staying in the union (and becoming active), you may be able to influence the union's political stances.

Wrong, it is legal. It is a condition of employment where I work. What the OP wants to become is called an agency employee. He will still be required to pay union dues but only a percentage (an amount determined for union operation and representation) will actually go to the union. The employee then can designate where the rest of the money goes. The OP needs to contact his union business rep asap. Some unions will use strongarm tactics to prevent someone from becoming an agency employee, that is illegal.
