What is the name of your state?
Yes I signed the dotted line so I will serve my country and that is why I am here in Iraq.
If I could get my college education over with I wouldn't care if I was being deployed again.
The whole reason I joined NG was to go to college and serve in the military not just go to college.
I wanted to serve my country and thats what I am doing but I won't do it at the cost of my education.
I didn't mind too much leaving school this time because I was going to a community college and the semester had not started yet. (BTW my Cpt. just walked in and gave me a certificate saying I have supported the Global War on Terror by meritorious service in Task Force Liberty during OIF III)
But if I am deployed again in 3 years I will be at a 4 year college and I will had a lot invested such as an apartment, school books, and will probobly be in the middle of a semester.
As anyone knows that has been in the military you do not get a lot of norice when being deployed this time I only had 4 days. Luckily I didn't have much going on but if I get deployed again it will screw everything up. I know other people may have it worse with a family and fulltime jobs but I've "payed the piper and now he needs to pay me".
I understand what you all are saying calling me a coward and whatnot saying how I'm taking advantage of the goverment for not fulfilling my duty but as I said before the national gaurd is supposed to be used for the state so my job if activated would and should be in the state of NJ for usually less than a month not overseas for more than a year.
Some of you are upset saying you should not be paying for my college but paying for my college would be a lot cheaper than keeping me here in a year of college at the school I plan on going to the army will have given me roughly about $12,000.
That includes my NG pay, GI bill, and College tuition.
A year over here and I get around $36,000.
I am over here "Serving my Country" which basically means being overseas wearing a US Army uniform. I can honestly say that there is no need for me and many other troops over here. The most productive that I get accomplished here while working is answering a phone or maybe making a few ethernet cables.
I feel it is not right that we are over here with this many people over 3,500 American soldiers have died and even more have been seriously injured. I was reading Stars and Stripes the other day and they had a page about former soldiers who were amputees and doing sports like shooting, skiing, ect.
It made me feel sick to my stomach that these soldiers weather they volenteered to go or not are living the rest of there life without the use of an arm or leg or both.
I don't want to say that they made all these sacrifices for nothing but I wish it was clearer to me what we are gaining from this war. Because it is not likely that we will diminish all terrorism just like we didn't get rid of communism during the Vietnam war. But that is my opinion and you are all entilted to your own.
I know this post has gone on way to much but some of you would rather call me names then help. I know some of you wanted to know more to why I didn't want to be deployed and so I've told you why. But if you didn't have any helpful info then I do not really see any point in replying to my post.
So far people have given me advice to:
Go to ROTC/OCS ("up and out")
Change units
Get medical work done
Conciensious objector
Hardship Letters
If anyone else has any good advice it will be greatly appreciated.
