I live in Louisiana. My mother lives in Indiana.
My new career involves frequent travel, so my two sons will be staying with my mother. I have a couple of questions about her being the children's legal guardian:
(1) How do I establish her as the legal guardian? Is it necessary to do this in court?
(2) My youngest son is mentally handicapped and receives SSI. The SSI will, of course, be transferred to my mother's address, but will the government use her income or mine as the basis for the payment if she is the legal guardian?
(3) Is it sufficient to just provide my mother with a notarized paper giving her permission to enroll the children in school or get them medical attention? Or does that leave too many holes?
Thank you in advance for any answers you can provide for me.
