Landlord lifted my large stash of money.

What is the name of your state?GA
I live in a really safe neighborhood in a really small town.
In a tiny one room apartment.
I had $1200 in a lock box in a cabinet under some luggage.
The box was stolen from between 8:00am to 5:00pm wednesday.
My front door was dead bolted when I arrived. Also the only window in my unit
was cracked open from where I had raised it the night before to let in air. The screen was still in place. The window had not moved. Plus there is an ac unit below the window that wont take weight and makes trying to climb in the window very hard.
I also have about 2 thousand dollars of new computer stuff
on the desk beside the cabinet that was untouched. Plus about a 500 dollar bike inside. I never see anybody walk past my apartment. Ever. I have neighbors to my left that I never see. I work from 8:00am to 5:00pm and every other hour of the day I am in my apartment. The cops said that they had NEVER come to my neighborhood for any calls. My land lady said that she wasn't in my apart the day that it happened but they were in there to fix a closet door either the day before or the friday before this happened.
I see the maintenence guy at the vacant appartment beside me about twice a week working on the unit. Should I suspect my land lady or apartment staff?
How could I prove it?

1] Sure, you can suspect them.
2] You can prove it with pictures, survellance films, witnesses, what ever will stand up in court.

That sucks when you know they had a key. Id demand that the locks be changed like now!! Even a former tenant could have had a key if the locks werent changed.

Thanks for the replies.
I know it is a lost cause.
I have no proof at all.
She is very aggressive when I ask questions.
Found out she is the property manager.
She almost had a stroke when I asked her for the owners name and number.
"He will just tell you what I just told you!"
She also swears that the repair guy is never in the apartments by himself.
But he is by himself in the apartment next to me now.

I am so stupid for not putting that money in the bank.

Renters insurance is really cheap and would have reimbursed you. Your not stupid you have every right to feel safe in your own home.

BTW....sorry for yor loss, bur FWIW this could be thought of as the 'price of an education.' Its been quite some time ago I tried helping out a young married couple that was having a lot of problems. They thanked me by leaving in the middle of the night, taking a TV, VCR and a brand new chain saw among other things. Only thing was I knew who done this-- still felt violated though.
Good advise about the renter's insurance and getting the police involved. I cannot imagine them NOT taking fingerprints, etc, but 'even if' they won't, make sure you file a police report-it might be your bike, computer, or who knowd what next time. [You have taken pictures of all your stuff, including the serial numbers, haven't you? It would be a lot easier to prove with pictures should something like this happen again.]

Sounds like an inside job probably maintenence guy/landlady..

This will drive you nuts for years, 4 years ago I had a house with full security system, which had an electronic safe bolted inside the cellar floor, and covered with a concrete slab, in it I had $5000 dollars individualy wrapped in $1000 packs, no one knew about the safe, I came home one day opened the safe, to get some docs, there was two $1000 packs missing, the other $3k was still there.

The following year I hid $2000 by unscrewing a toilet roll holder made a small hole and droped the cash in there along with two watchs, I opened it up a couple of days later the watches were still there but the cash was gone, no sign of a break in on both incidents, nothing else disturbed or missing in the house.

To this day it still drives me nuts thinking about it and how the hell did someone know the two hiding spots expecialy the toilet roll holder, I mean who thinks to unscrew a toilet holder to look behind it. (Besides the person that took it)

So I guess your brain is frying right now.

Thanks guys for responding. I am kicking myself right now for not buying
renters insurance :( only 80 dollars a year.

I talked to the owner today and found out that the maintenance guy
has been here only 2 months. I know it was that guy. Supposedly the
police are going to check him out. But the detective said that she
wasn't going to come back for finger prints. She thought that the fake wood cabinet that held my strong box wouldn't work to transfer the finger prints.
I mentioned the window again but she pretty much told me that she wasn't coming back.

I also talked to the cpa/owner. He was nice and talked for a while
but he didn't tell me anything important.
Man I hope the guy that took my stuff does something stupid like sell the
TAG watch that was in there. Maybe he will get busted.
