Handicapped Parking Citation Inquiry:

I live in Dallas, Texas.

I was ticketed for parking in a handicapped parking spot (about three hours ago) in front of a store (I simply didn't see the sign, but it was actually very clearly visible--I won't dispute that). I dropped a friend off at a store with another friend in the car, but I turned off the car. In about ten seconds (yes, ten seconds), a police officer pulled up behind me and blocked me in. The officer gave me a citation for parking in a handicapped zone and said that the fine is $540. I don't have car insurance, my car is not registered, and my vehicle is not inspected, but this was not on the citation. I know that by driving without registration, inspection, and insurance; I'm asking for trouble, and I will, however, acquire these three in the very near future, but I'm still hoping for a better way out of this. Is there any way I could get this dismissed (simply because of how soon a penalty was administered or anything else possibly objectionable) or have this result in a more lenient outcome?

Thank you in advance.

I am handicapped and

I may get bashed for applauding the officer who ticketed you.
The special parking is for a reason, without this parking I wouldnt be able to leave my home.

The ticket is fair and legal you are not allowed to use the space at all even if the car is still running without propper disability parking placars or plates.

I suggest you get the other problems with your car fixed before you are in bigger trouble.

I'm simply being honest and you rub in the obvious. Actually, wait, no I'm not. As a matter of fact, I'm not the person that this happened to. I was the passenger. I'm trying to help out a friend. It's bad enough that he doesn't have insurance, an outdated inspection/registration, and that he still drives; but that isn't the point. That's not the problem in this case, so please, ignore irrelevance. Ten seconds in a handicapped parking spot that we simply did not see (and there being two free spots to the right, and three more on the left across the sidewalk) and -$540... yeah, I'm sure that's legal, but fair?

Well, thanks for your help. dogwood, get a life. rmet4nzkx, you have no concept of fairness.

This is a legal forum, not a support or venting site. What is fair is not the question, law is objective in many ways to be fair for the common good. One could ask, was it fair of you to ask your friend for a ride, knowing he had no insurance, current inspection or registration? Because of your small need you cost your friend a lot of money they don't have if that is the reaason they are not current, but if they are just a scoff law, well then they got what was coming, but either way it is more your fault than mine.
