All that you can do is continue to look and apply for apartments.

Many LL will not accept an applicant that has been evicted, especially for non payment of rent. You are learning this the hardest way possible.

There is no legal advice that will help your situation.

Unfortunately

Unfortunately. It is going to be very hard for you guys to find another place to live because of the eviction for non-payment of rent. It stay on credit record for 7 yrs. There is some landlords that may rent to you but they will be slum lords and some I know will charge more than usual because the tenants have no choice because they are desperate. if you get in an apt complex where your eviction does not matter remember your neighbors will be druggies, criminals and possibly sex offenders. the one thing is does anyone in your family work? or you will be right back where you are now with a second eviction on your credit record. check with social services, churches, and shelters maybe they will have a lead on some places with lax landlords but remember do not lie to a potential landlord becuase you cannot hide the eviction. What you should have done is left voluntary that way it would have stayed off your credit report. You by staying there ticked off the Lanlord. Also the Landlord if you do not pay the back rent can garnish any wages and attatch things that are not exempt. I have a feeling your problems are going to get a whole lot worse before they get any better.

Pay

You were evicted because you did not pay rent. The best way to handle it is to call the Landlord and pay him/her all the back rent and then ask him/her to give you a good reference. If you don't, this eviction will cost you big time for the rest of your life. Ex - when or if you have a child that wants to go to a good school, you cannot move into that neighborhood because you do not pay rent. That child will get a second rate education, get a second rate job, have a second rate marriage, have children (your Grandchildren) that will have a second rate education, etc. All because you stole from some Landlord!

Free stuff

Did you get groceries for free because your husband lost his job? Did you get gas for free because your husband lost his job? Did you get toothpaste, toilet paper or shoes for free because your husband lost his job?

not paying rent

When a person lives in a house/apt without paying the landlord rent it is stealing not to try to pay him. after all your landlord has bills of his own because of your place should the govt give his free tax break because you did not pay him. even though your husband lost his job you still did not pay for you own housing. it is not upto your ex landlord to give you free rent and to carry you guys landlords are in the business to make money they are not in the business to subsidize people.
