What is the name of your state? Oklahoma
Please tell me if I am in the wrong place. I have a question regarding California laws regarding medical bills. In Oklahoma, as long as you are making payments montly and the hospital is cashing them (which means they are accepting your payments) they can't turn you into collections. Does anyone know if that is the case or what the laws are in CA about this? Thanks ahead of time for any help.

They can turn you into collections but if you're making payments they usually don't. Are you worried they are going to or have they turned you into collections?

Thanks for any help or recommmendations.

I would suggest to just keep on paying the collection agency then. Even if they were to take you to court to try and get their money the judge would see that you are trying to pay it and most likely dismiss the case. Don't fret to much about it. Maybe someone else will have more advice.

This may not be the most appropriate section of the forum to ask about California's laws on payment of medical bills. Post your question in debts/collections; JETX may be able/willing to answer.

It is common practice for hospitals and other healthcare providers to out-source collection/billing of accounts over 90-days standing, regardless of whether or not payment is being made each month. It is more cost-effective to 'sell' the bills to a collection agency than it is to keep such accounts in-house.

As long as you keep making payment as agreed, I doubt you will have any 'bad' entry made on your credit report. It is possible, though, that your credit will show that you paid a balance of X to xyz collection agency, which can/will be interpretted negatively.

Ask the collection agency if any reporting of any kind will be made to your credit report. If the answer is affirmative, ask if the collection agency is willing to forego making any report on your credit if you pay as agreed.

Best wishes,
EC
