What is the name of your state? CT
Approx. a yr and half ago, my father inlaw signed over his house and property to me by way of filing a quit-claim which was filed at the town hall. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but it was for the the sum of one dollar(the advice of the clerk, I know, should of hired a lawyer). Anyways, dad is still alive and physically healthy and lives downstairs(of 2-fam). A friend of mine mentioned that I may owe the state gift tax. Is this true? If so, do I just contact my states tax office? How do they figure out the amt of tax etc....
The following, I am looking for advice or some input on what I should do if anything. (Long post).
Dads old lady friend(an ex-wife of 10 months)has sneaked her way back into dads life and thinks that the house is still in dads name. She has stolen thousands of $$$ over the yrs after my mother inlaw died. Both have been arrested several times for domestic issues and have been ordered to stay away from each other etc....beleive it or not, we are talking about 82 and 84 yr olds!!! I am conservator and she had dad go and get a P.O. Box for his mail, had him go to cemetary and sign a plot over for her to buried in. At one time he did buy it for her but at time of divorce he got it. After divorce, she went to the office and showed reciept for the plot,(dad paid cash, she had pd reciept)so they refunded her$$$), then for a short time they got back together and he went and rebought that same plot but this time he kept the reciept. Long story, sorry, again, they broke up, I then became conservatrix, and went to the cemetary and told them that she has no interest in this plot....A month later, I get a call, saying that she called and says that again she wants to sell this plot!! This time she has no prove of payment. I added this info because I want to give you an idea of what I am dealing with here, it's not this little old sweet lady. Now, dad has said to me, that she is pushing him to marry her and she wants to move in here. She went to the VA with his to see his therapist and the therapist called me and told me that all that lady kept saying to dad was "that's your house, not theirs", .......The therapist feels that he is being pushed into things that he is no longer capable to decide upon".....I also have a hearing coming up because the conservorship was voluntary, and his lady friend told him that he should be in "charge of himself" and now it looks like we are going to be dealing with an involuntary one because dads mental health has declined and his doctors say that he needs somebody to monitor him. It's alot more complicated now. He is now very depressed and afraid, his words, "that he will lose me".....I tell him that "I will always be there for him".....he wants everything to stop and go back to how it has been. He tried to stop seeing this lady but she keeps calling, stopping over etc...I called the cops and told them that this is my property and I don't want her on it but I was told that unless my father inlaw states that she can visit. One day, he says it's over, the next day he talks with her, so I figure leave it alone.
I have other issues, but I will post them under the appropriate thread(s).
Thanks for input,
JUDE
